Atlanta United’s Josef Martínez has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, the club confirmed on Sunday.

The star striker took an awkward step during a 50-50 challenge in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Nashville. He went down to the ground for several minutes and then attempted to continue, but was ultimately substituted in the 69th minute.

Martínez left Nissan Stadium on crutches, and Atlanta United said he will have surgery on a date yet to be determined. The typical recovery time for a torn ACL is 6-9 months, meaning Martínez is in danger of missing the rest of the season.

Major League Soccer’s MVP in 2018, Martínez won MLS Cup that same season and has been with Atlanta United since its inception. He joined as a loanee from Torino in February 2017 and was bought outright by Atlanta less than two months later.

The 26-year-old set the MLS single-season scoring record with 31 goals in 2018. His record was broken by LAFC’s Carlos Vela last season, but Martínez still scored 27 more himself and led Atlanta United to the U.S. Open Cup title.

In all, Martínez has scored 90 goals in 103 appearances across all competitions for Atlanta. The club wished him well in a tweet on Sunday:
